scriptures fhe

Conference Talk:
For more information on this topic read "Gospel Learning and Teaching", by David
M. McConkie, Ensign, Nov. 2010, 13–15.
Thought:
Immerse yourself in the scriptures. We cannot love what we do not know.
(David M. McConkie, "Gospel Learning and Teaching", Ensign, Nov. 2010, 13–15.)
Song:
“Search, Ponder, and Pray,” Children’s Songbook, p. 109
Scripture:
And upon these I write the things of my soul, and many of the scriptures which are
engraven upon the plates of brass. For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my
heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my
children.
(2 Nephi 4:13)
Object Lesson:
Objective: To show that the scriptures can protect us if we use them.
Materials Needed: An umbrella and the scriptures.
Procedure: Hold up a closed umbrella and explain that it can protect us from
the elements such as rain, sleet, or snow. Point out that it must be opened and used
in order to offer that protection. Liken the umbrella to the scriptures. The scriptures
were given to teach us the truth, which protects us from Satan’s deceptions and
temptations. Remind the class that in order to protect us, the scriptures must be
opened and used.
(Beth Lefgren and Jennifer Jackson, Object Lessons Made Easy, [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book,
2010], p. 81.)
Story:
In the spring of 1949, M. Russell Ballard, at that time a young missionary in
England, was called as president of the Nottingham District. Elder Ballard had
been on his mission less than a year, but already he was serving as the leader of
thirty-four full-time missionaries.
The work was hard, and the missionaries were constantly searching for new
ways to preach the gospel. Like many missionaries, the new district president
wanted to do something dramatic. But when the opportunity came, it turned out to
be a little more than he had bargained for.
The Midland Debating Society was an old and respected organization in
England. A member of the society contacted Elder Ballard and asked whether an
authority from the LDS church could make a presentation. Elder Ballard was sure that his mission
president, Selvoy J. Boyer, would jump at the chance to present the message of the restored gospel to
such a large and important group of people. The plan was for President Boyer to speak for forty-five
minutes on the doctrines of the Church. Following his speech, those who wished to disagree would be
allowed five minutes each. Then a question-and-answer period would follow.
Elder Ballard agreed to the format, set a date, and called the mission president. With great
excitement he explained the opportunity. No Mormon missionary had spoken to this society since John
A. Widtsoe—a powerful, even legendary missionary—had addressed the group twenty-five years
before. Elder Ballard knew that President Boyer was a gospel scholar and a fine speaker. He would
make a wonderful impression on the audience.
President Boyer listened to all this and then simply said, "Good luck, my boy."
Elder Ballard was taken back for a moment. The mission president had obviously misunderstood.
So Elder Ballard started over. Once again he explained the arrangements, and this time he was very
clear that it was the president who was to do the speaking.
President Boyer listened again, and this time he said, "The Lord bless you, my boy." Then he hung
up the phone.
President Boyer, of course, recognized the importance of this experience to his young district
president, but Elder Ballard wasn't looking that far ahead. More than anything else, Elder Ballard was
scared. He didn't want to make a fool of himself. The audience would be full of older, experienced
British debaters. He was a twenty-year-old American. Who would even take him seriously?
On the day of the presentation, he asked all thirty-four missionaries in the district to come to the
great hall in Nottingham where he would speak. When they arrived, he asked them to scatter
themselves through the audience. The fact was, Elder Ballard was not even sure that he and the other
missionaries were safe. A debate of this kind could create great emotion.
Over twelve hundred people came to hear what the Mormon missionary would have to say for
himself. Elder Ballard stood before them, feeling very much alone. He gave a presentation that was
simple yet profound. He explained that Christ had established a church during his time on earth, but
that after Christ died, the church changed and the priesthood power disappeared. He explained how the
doctrines had become confused after Christ's death, and he told about the Nicene Council, where early
Christians had met and agreed to teachings that were not inspired. He then quoted scriptures showing
that Christ had known this would happen. Finally, he explained how the true teachings of the gospel of
Jesus Christ had been restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith.
When Elder Ballard was finished, members of the debating society—mature, educated men and
women—rose one after another to disagree with him. They accused Mormons of false teachings. They
attacked the Book of Mormon. They challenged the very idea that a restoration had been necessary.
Elder Ballard listened and waited for his chance to defend the truth.
When the time was opened up for questions, Elder Ballard was nervous but eager to set the record
straight. He had less than an hour to leave a lasting final impression on his listeners. But as the
questions began, the missionary's anxiety turned into joy as he was filled with the power of the Holy
Ghost.
Elder Ballard understood each question before it was finished, and the answer came to him
immediately. He felt the Lord's Spirit, like a flood, filling him and guiding his responses. Sometimes he
would actually quote scriptures by heart—verses he had read once or twice but certainly had never
memorized. He spoke with clarity and yet with warmth and good will, and the audience was moved.
Time and again the questioners were impressed by Elder Ballard's answers as they heard his sound
reasoning and felt the spirit with which he spoke. When the meeting finally ended, the crowd stood and
gave him a standing ovation! Members of the debating society conversed with the many missionaries
and congratulated Elder Ballard for his brilliant presentation.
But Elder Ballard knew better. Brilliance had nothing to do with it. He remembered the promise
that the Savior had given to his apostles as he was preparing them for the time when he would no
longer be with them. He told them that they would be able to teach the gospel because the Holy Ghost
would guide them: "The comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name,
he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto
you." (John 14:26.)
Elder Ballard had felt alone as he had faced the great crowd, but he had not been alone. The Holy
Ghost had been with him, ready to help him, and Elder Ballard's study of the gospel had prepared him.
He had planted truths in his mind through his scripture study, and when he had needed those truths, the
Holy Ghost had brought them to his remembrance—according to the promise.
(Tom Hughes, Dean Hughes, We'll Bring the World His Truth: Missionary Adventures from Around the World, [Salt Lake
City: Deseret Book, 1995], p. 62.)
Activity:
Use this activity to review the order of the books of the Book of Mormon.
Someone selects a book. For example, they may be thinking of the book of Ether.
You can play as individuals or in groups. One of the individuals or groups guesses what book they
think the person is thinking of. The person then indicates if the guess is high (comes after the correct
answer) or low (comes before the correct answer), and the next group or individual takes a turn.
Continue this process until the correct answer is given.
(Max Molgard and Allan Burgess, The Best of Fun for Family Night, [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 2003], p. 104.)

The Holy Ghost FHE

Conference Talk:
For more information on this topic read "Receive the Holy Ghost" by David A. Bednar, Ensign, Nov.
2010, 94–98.)
Thought:
The Holy Ghost is manifested to men and women on the earth both as the power and as the gift of
the Holy Ghost. The power can come upon a person before baptism; it is the convincing witness that
Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. Through the power of the Holy Ghost, sincere investigators
can acquire a conviction of the truthfulness of the Savior’s gospel, of the Book of Mormon, of the
reality of the Restoration, and of the prophetic calling of Joseph Smith.
The gift of the Holy Ghost is bestowed only after proper and authorized baptism and by the laying
on of hands by those holding the Melchizedek Priesthood.
(David A. Bednar, "Receive the Holy Ghost", Ensign, Nov. 2010, 94–98.)
Song:
“The Still Small Voice,” Children’s Songbook, p. 106.
Scripture:
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach
you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
(John 14:26)
Object Lesson:
Invite a child to come up and help. Tell the group you are going to whisper something important to
them. Give the child the can and spoon. Instruct her to bang on the can as you whisper to the group.
Very softly, whisper, “The Holy Ghost is a wonderful friend. He wants to help you return to Heavenly
Father.”
Ask if it was hard for the group to hear you. Explain that the inspiration of the Holy Ghost is often
like someone quietly whispering. Sometimes we may need to go to a quiet place and ponder or think
about the guidance we need.
Brainstorm: Encourage your group to share things that might keep us from hearing the Holy Ghost.Story:
Amy was in the fourth grade. It was springtime, and every day after lunch she would play softball
with the other children. Some of the children liked to make fun of her. They teased her when she tried
to hit the ball, run, or catch. This hurt her feelings, and she began to say mean things to them. Each day
her problem seemed to get worse.
After school one day, Amy talked to her mother about what was happening at school. Her mother
comforted Amy, but she also reminded her that the Holy Ghost was there to help her too.
Amy thought about that all afternoon. That night as she prayed she told Heavenly Father about the
problem, and she asked for the Holy Ghost’s help. As she knelt quietly beside her bed, she was
reminded of the mean things she had said to the other children. (Ask: Who reminded her of things she
should repent of? The Holy Ghost.) She felt sad, and she told Heavenly Father how sorry she was. She
promised him she would not act that way again.
The next day, as the children played softball, the teasing began again. Once, Amy nearly said
something rude in return, but suddenly she remembered her promise to Heavenly Father. (Ask: Who
helped her remember her promise? The Holy Ghost.) It took a lot of strength, but she treated everyone
kindly, even the children who were being mean to her.
Day after day the children kept teasing Amy. She continued to pray for the Holy Ghost to help her.
One day as she began to go on the softball field she had a feeling she shouldn’t play ball that day, so
she went to the playground and played by herself on the swings. It was a little lonely.
The following day Amy once again felt that she shouldn’t play ball. She went over to the swings.
This time there was another girl swinging too. After a few minutes, Amy thought she should talk to the
girl. She said hello and asked her what her name was. The other girl’s name was Stacy, and her family
had just moved into town. Amy found out that she was in the other fourth grade class. Amy and Stacy
became very good friends. (How did the Holy Ghost help Amy to make a new friend? The Holy Ghost
prompted her not to play ball. The Holy Ghost also prompted her to talk to the new girl.)
(Beth Lefgren and Jennifer Jackson, Sharing Time, Family Time, Anytime: Book 2, [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1994], p.
49.)
Activity:
The object is to blow out a candle which rests on a table.
A player is blindfolded, moved back three steps, and turned around. He may take three steps before
blowing.
It is hard to reach goals if you attempt to do it blindly. The Holy Ghost helps you find your way.
(Alma Heaton, The LDS Game Book, [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1968], p. 122.)

2⁄3 cup milk
1⁄2 cup butter, melted

The Light Of Christ

We know from the scriptures that the Light of Christ is “the Spirit [which] giveth light to every man that cometh into the world.” This light is given “for the sake of the whole world.

Conference Talk:
For more information on this topic read “Let There Be Light!”, by Quentin L. Cook, Ensign, Nov. 2010, 27–30.

Thought:
The Light of Christ, which is distinct from the Holy Ghost, informs their conscience. We know from the scriptures that the Light of Christ is “the Spirit [which] giveth light to every man that cometh into the world.” This light is given “for the sake of the whole world. (Quentin L. Cook, “Let There Be Light!”, Ensign, Nov. 2010, 27–30.)

Song:
“I Feel My Savior’s Love,” Children’s Songbook, p. 74

Scripture:
And the Spirit giveth light to every man that cometh into the world; and the Spirit enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit. (Doctrine and Covenants 84:46)

Object Lesson:
Materials Needed: Several battery powered tea lights.
Procedure: If possible, darken the room slightly. Turn on one tea light and place it in the middle of the table. Ask: What things can you do daily to invite the Spirit? (Pray, read scriptures, serve others, etc.) As each idea is shared, turn on another tea light and place it by the first one. When all the lights have been used, ask what would happen if more tea lights were turned on.

Liken the tea lights to the Spirit of the Lord. As we obey the commandments and participate in spiritual activities, we invite the Spirit and bring light into our lives.

Note: candles could be used instead of the battery powered lights.

Story:
By Harold B. Lee
One day, my grandmother, my mother, and two or three of the younger children were seated before an open door, watching the great display of nature’s fireworks as a severe thunderstorm raged near the mountain where our home was located. A flash of lightning followed by an immediate loud clap of thunder indicated that the lightning had struck very close.

I was standing in the doorway when, suddenly and without warning, my mother gave me a vigorous push that sent me sprawling on my back out of the doorway. At that instant, a bolt of lightning came down the chimney of the kitchen stove, raced through the open doorway, and split a huge gash from top to bottom in a large tree immediately in front of the house. If I had remained in the door opening, I wouldn’t be writing this story today.

My mother could never explain her split-second decision. All I know is that my life was
spared because of her impulsive, intuitive action.

Years later, when I saw the deep scar on that large tree at the old family home, I could only say, from a grateful heart, Thank the Lord for that precious gift possessed in abundant measure by my own mother and by many other faithful mothers, through whom heaven can be very near in time of need.

During my young boyhood, there were many occasions when mother’s instructive and intuitive understanding prompted her to know that help was needed. Once on a stormy night she directed my father to go and search for me, only to find that my horse had stumbled and thrown me into a pool of half-frozen mud. My mother had known that help was needed.

Someone has coined a statement that has great significance: “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.”

Within every child born into the world there is a heavenly gift. The Lord has revealed that this is the Light of Christ, or the Light of Truth. Even in early childhood, this gift gives to every person the ability to tell the difference between what is right and of the Lord and what is wrong and of the world. Sometimes we call this our conscience, or the voice of the Spirit of God within us.

Following baptism and as a blessing from the elders of the Church, we are given another gift—the gift of the Holy Ghost. As explained by the Master, this is to teach us that we may know the truth of all things, to bring all things to our remembrance, and to even show us things to come.

When one becomes a father or a mother, it is especially important that he or she prepares to receive, through these wonderful gifts from the Lord, the great gift of understanding necessary to rear children and make certain they are taught properly as commanded by the Lord. These heaven-sent instructions or warnings parents receive for their families might be called intuition or the voice of the Lord coming into their minds to safeguard their homes. Parents have the responsibility of teaching and training in correct principles. Then when children are old enough and have the stability and responsibility to make mature judgments and right decisions, they will have received proper teaching from wise parents in the homes from which they have come.

From my experience, it would seem that faithful mothers have a special gift that we often refer to as mother’s intuition. Perhaps, with the great blessings of motherhood, our Heavenly Father has endowed them with this quality, since fathers, busy in priesthood callings and earning a livelihood, never draw quite as close to heavenly beings in matters that relate to the more intimate details of bringing up children in the home. It might be described in this way: Father is the head, but Mother is the heart, of the family home.

Activity:
Play Harmony.

One player begins the game by saying, for instance, “I am thinking of something in the room that rhymes with “fair.” The others ask, “Is it chair?” “Is it hair?” “Is it pear?” and so on until they guess it. The one who guesses correctly starts another. The game may be varied by enlarging the boundaries so that one is not confined to the room for his thought.

Just as we need to be in harmony with the other players in the game to figure out what they are thinking, our lives should be in harmony with the Savior to feel his influence.

Refreshment:
Toffee Torte

1 package devil’s food cake mix
1 (16-ounce) carton frozen whipped topping, thawed
7 English toffee bars (Heath® or Skor®), crushed

Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. Prepare and bake the cake according to package directions. Cool on a wire rack. (If time permits the cakes can be frozen for easier handling.) Carefully cut each layer in half horizontally. Place thawed whipped topping in a bowl and fold in 6 of the crushed candy bars. Place one layer of the cake on a serving plate and spread with 1/2 cup of the topping mixture. Repeat with the remaining 3 layers. Frost the sides and top with the topping mixture. Sprinkle the remaining crushed bar on top of the cake.
